JESUS: The Great I Am

JESUS' CHURCH

JESUS' CHURCH Matthew 16:18

While still on the earth, Jesus declared that he was building a church.

Matthew 16:18 "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I [Jesus] will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

Many believe that the church was born at Pentecost, after Jesus' ascension when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples. Others believe it was born right here in Matthew 16:18. Regardless of when the church was brought into existence, it is a reality today for us.

What is the purpose of the Church?

Acts 2:42 "And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers."

The Apostle's Teaching
Church is a place to study God's Word. The Apostles taught the gospel of Jesus and revealed him through the scriptures (old testament). They taught the need to disciple the world. We are to study their teaching so that we can properly apply them.

Fellowship
Church is a place of socialization for the Body of Christ. This is where we can be with our fellow believers in Christ. Fellowship includes talking to, sharing our lives with and building eternity-long relationships.

Breaking Bread
The Lord's Supper (Communion) is one of he esential activities of the church. Jesus told his disciples to practice this activity in remembrance of Jesus. We also often eat regular meals together at church as a form of fellowship.

Prayer
In Matthew 21, Jesus said "My house should be a house of prayer". When we attend church services, we should attend with as heart towards speaking with God. Prayer can be performed personally and collaboratively. Let us pray often!
